Watertown Humane Society (WHS) is a “little shelter with a big heart” located in Watertown, Wisconsin. We are currently seeking a compassionate and dedicated person to join our team as a Vet Tech Assistant.  This position serves as the direct assistant to our veterinarian performing vaccine exams and dentals. There is a significant amount of animal interaction required in the job, as well as physical and strenuous activity.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Assist the Veterinarian with Dentals and Vaccine Appointments
A veterinary assistant's job description includes a wide range of tasks, but the main focus being to support veterinarians and technicians with animal care, assisting with medical procedures and laboratory work, performing administrative tasks, and maintaining the veterinary facility.  Key duties involve restraining animals for exams and treatments; assisting with sample collection; cleaning and sterilizing equipment and kennels; monitoring recovering patients; and helping with client education and paperwork.

Animal Care & Facility Maintenance

  • Facility upkeep: Cleaning and disinfecting cages, kennels, examination rooms, and surgical areas.
  • Patient monitoring: Monitoring animals post-treatment.

Medical Assistance

  • Restraint: Safely handling and restraining animals during examinations, treatments, and lab procedures.
  • Medication Administration: Giving prescribed medications, drugs, and vaccines.
  • Sample Collection: Collecting blood, urine, feces, and other samples for lab testing.
  • Procedure Support: Assisting with basic diagnostics like taking vital signs and X-rays, and preparing animals and equipment for surgery.
    Administrative Tasks

    • Client Communication: Scheduling appointments, and educating pet owners on basic care and treatment instructions.
    • Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate patient records, logs, and medical histories.
    • Inventory Management:  Communicating with the clinic manager to keep track of and ordering medical supplies, equipment.
    • Providing Information:

    Educating clients on nutrition, recommended practices, and care for their pets.

    • Handling Paperwork:

    Assisting clients with forms, vaccine certificates and any other necessary documents.

    Supervises: No direct supervision.

    Reports to: Clinic Manager then Executive Director

    Desired Skills & Experience:  

    • At least one year experience working hands on in a veterinarian clinic
    • Confident and skilled animal handling ability
    • Diligent focus on following safety procedures
    • A compassionate and understanding attitude
    • The ability to stay flexible and respectful to coworkers
    • Friendly, approachable nature and the ability to speak sensitively to others
    • Great customer service skills
    • A strong organizational drive

    Job Type: Part-Time, Hourly (est. 18-20 hrs/week)

    Salary: $12-15/hour starting based on qualifications and experience
